Skipper Melburn Vaz’s brace helped Don Bosco, Borivli register a comfortable 5-0 win over Dhirubhai Ambani International, Bandra-Kurla Complex, in an U-16 Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) Div II match at St Xavier’s ground, Parel yesterday.

Watching him dart around the field, one couldn’t believe that three years ago, Vaz wasn’t in a position to even walk, having met with an accident.

Recollecting the serious mishap he said, “I was playing with my friends at Gorai beach and a bike came charging in. I hurt my left thigh badly and injured a part of my right cheekbone. I was unable to even walk properly for a year.

The doctors advised me to stop playing. But it was my father (Wilson) who encouraged me and I am back to what I like doing best - playing football.”

Melburn (15) opened the scoring in the second minute with a brilliant solo effort. The striker then extended the lead in the 44th minute. Later, he assisted Aaron Alex to score in the 48th minute.

However, Bosco weren’t done yet. Wayne Trinidade added two more (51st and 52 minute) to take the tally to 5-0. u00a0The Borivli side was relegated to Div II in 2007 but their coach Melville Fernandes hopes they will be able to fight their way back into the top division by the end of this season.

“This is the same team that defeated Don Bosco, Matunga in the U-14 Div I semi-finals in 2011. But if we play the way we are doing right now, I feel we will be able to break into the Elite Division. Melburn is a very skillful player and he was the player of the day for us,” said Fernandes.

Melburn, who is in Class X now wants to pass out by winning the Div II title and getting his school promoted to Div I. “We have won all the five matches we played in the league so far. I just pray that we give our school a promotion before passing out,” said the Borivli lad.
