Mumbai may host charity match for drought victims

Having received only a third of the average rainfall this year, the Maharashtra government is likely to announce a drought in the state. In such a scenario, Mumbai's cricketing fraternity wants to raise funds for drought-affected victims.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has received a proposal from one of its members, Ravi Mandrekar, to organise an all-stars match to raise funds for drought-affected regions in the state. The dry spell has reportedly hurt farmers especially in Marathwada, where they haven't been able to sow Rabi (winter) crop.

The proposal will be up for discussion during the September 10 Managing Committee meeting to be attended by MCA president Sharad Pawar, who is also the former union agriculture minister.

If the members agree, MCA will approach legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and current superstars like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane for the tie. The proceeds from the match will be handed over to the Maharashtra.

In the meeting, MCA will also finalise the tickets rate for the India-South Africa ODI (Oct 25) at Wankhede.
