Former Australia captain Steve Waugh believes the trusted soldier from the old army Ricky Ponting is perfectly equipped to take Australian cricket to a new level. In Mumbai to launch 6UP, a mobile phone game, Waugh said Ponting's captaincy would surely help youngsters in the national team like Shane Watson, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Johnson to play a long innings for Australian cricket.

Ponting, having captained stars like Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist, all now retired from international cricket, has taken the first step in the right direction with the Champions Trophy win, Waugh said.

"Players keep coming in and going out. I faced a similar situation when I was captain. Ricky is a pretty experienced guy and has been leading the side for a long time. I am sure he can handle the players well," Waugh said.

"Also, we have a very good team as the results suggest. There has been talk that the Australian team is inexperienced, but I feel the guys have played enough cricket to be relatively experienced.

"Even during the Champions Trophy, they were on a roll. They played a great game against Pakistan, defeated England and then New Zealand in the final comprehensively.

"That's what cricket is all about. You need to be on a roll," Waugh said.

He added that the Aussies, even rookies, are never scared of playing the big games. "There is this desire to do well in big games. They have the urge to win those big semi-finals and the finals," Waugh said.
