Pressure of playing at home is the biggest worry cited by cricket pundits for sub-continental teams in this World Cup
Pressure of playing at home is the biggest worry cited by cricket pundits for sub-continental teams in this World Cup. However, Rameez Raja, a member of Imran Khan's 1992 World Cup-winning squad and now an influential Pakistani voice in the game, slammed such concerns.
"I truly believe this time sub-continental teams are clear favourites to win the Cup. Although, people may point out that there is a huge pressure on the home teams, I feel that has become irrelevant with so much cricket being played in front of home crowds. On the contrary, I feel it's a real home advantage," said Rameez, who also figured in the 1987 and 1996 World Cups.
Although Rameez felt Mahendra Singh Dhoni's Indians are favourites to lift the coveted trophy, the charismatic captain has a few worries. "India's batting is formidable, but their bowling is a concern, especially the fitness," he said.
Just a few days ago, Pakistan were without a captain before the responsibility was given to Shahid Afridi.
However, Rameez still backs chaotic Pakistan to come good in the World Cup.
"Pakistan as usual, will be the dark horse. There is always a surprise element in this team. Having done well against New Zealand in NZ would have given them much-needed boost ahead of a major competition," the former captain said.
