Roger Binny set to become Chairman of Selectors?

With the Indian team having a nightmarish tour of England having lost all the three Tests so far, talk of the selectors being granted an extension for another term has run into rough weather. "With this sort of performance, I don't think the selectors should get extensions, though I agree that selectors cannot be solely responsible for the debacle," a top board official told MiD DAY yesterday, on the eve of the year's last BCCI working committee meeting.

Even if the entire panel is not dissolved, at least a couple of changes look imminent. North Zone representative Yashpal Sharma, who has finished his term, will have to make way for someone from his zone, while current chairman of the selectors, Krisnamachari Srikkanth, could also find it difficult to retain his place.

Apparently, sensing the urgency for a change, KSCA has forwarded former India seamer Roger Binny's name to BCCI president-elect N Srinivasan as a candidate from South Zone. "Yes. KSCA have put forward Binny's name, so he may represent the South Zone this time," the official said.

For North Zone, two names -- Vikram Rathore and Sanjeev Sharma -- are doing the rounds. "Rathore is surely the frontrunner as of now," added the official.

As far Srikkanth's slot is concerned, there will be debate on whether he could be retained. Given his proximity to BCCI secretary Srinivasan, Srikkanth could have stayed for another year, had India not fared so poorly in England.

However, the working committee that meets here today could well discuss this issue before a final a decision is made at the annual general meeting to be held next month.
