The unseeded Indo-Italian pair, who got a bye in the first round, lost 3-6 3-6 to top seeded pair of Zimbabwean Cara Black and American Liezel Huber in one hour and 10 minutes.
Sania and her Italian partner had many a chances to break their opponents but could convert just three out of five. The winners broke Sania-Sanatngelo twice in the first set and four times in the second to book a quarter-final berth.
Saina will get 110 ranking points and split USD 6250 prize money with Santangelo. Sania had lost her second round singles match to Kaia Kanepi on Tuesday.
