Republican candidate Trump has fuelled controversy with comments on Muslims, Mexicans and military veterans. Williams, the World No 1 and defending Olympic champion, didn't directly criticise Trump.

But when asked to comment, the 34-year-old said: "I don't involve myself in politics, but it's important for me to pass a message of love and unity across all nations. "Being an African-American, I am sensitive to these things. We should pass a message of love."
