Shocking day for Australian cricket: Langer

Australia batting coach Justin Langer bemoaned a "shocking day" for cricket in his country after England took command of the fourth Ashes Test in Melbourne.

The hosts were bowled out for 98 ufffd their lowest-ever total at the MCG ufffd as pace duo James Anderson and Chris Tremlett made good of Andrew Strauss' decision to bowl after winning the toss.

Anderson's ability to swing the ball and the bounce Tremlett extracted from the drop-in pitch, combined with some rash shot-making from the home side, allowed England to assume control, with Strauss and Alastair Cook then taking them through to 157 without loss at the close.

Langer told BBC Sport: "We can make as many excuses as we like but it's an unacceptable performance.

"It's been a shocking day for Australian cricket and we will have to fight back more than ever before to claw this game back."

He added: "A Boxing Day Test match, in a series against England tied at 1-1 ufffd a total of 98 isn't acceptable in any form of cricket, let alone a Test match as big as this."
