Former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan (left) is pleased to see the success enjoyed by fellow spinners in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Yesterday's game here at MA Chidambaram Stadium saw as many as five specialist spinners - R Ashwin, Suraj Randiv, Shadab Jakati, Rahul Sharma and Murali Kartik - represent Chennai and Pune.
"Definitely, over the last few IPL seasons we have seen the importance of spinners in this format. Initially, people felt that spinners would find it tough in T20, but the leading wicket-taker in the last edition was a spinner (Pragyan Ojha), and that trend might continue this year," Sivaramakrishnan told MiD DAY.
"It's also good to see that captains are using spinners as attacking options. Last year, I was very impressed with the way Ashwin was used by MS Dhoni, and likewise with Pragyan Ojha in the season before that (by Adam Gilchrist)," he added.
