Rohan Luherar of St Michael's High School (Mahim) made the most of his borrowed pair of boots and gave his school a winning start in the District Sports Office (DSO)-Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) U-17 knockout tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.
After both teams finished goalless in full time, Rohan (16) not only scored in the subsequent tie-breaker but also donned the goalkeeper’s gloves and effected two saves too as St Michael’s beat IES VN Sule Guruji, Dadar 3-1.u00a0

Rohan readily accepted the ’keeper’s role after regular custodian Vikas Dulgach was not confident of delivering the goods in the shootout. Rohan later told MiD DAY that he had done all this with a pair of boots he borrowed from an ex-student of the school. “I could never ask my parents to buy me boots as we are not financially well off.
I used to train with regular shoes until one of our former players offered me his studs,” said Rohan, whose mother — the the sole earning member of the family — works as a housekeeper in a private hospital, while his father has been out of work for over a decade due to an illness.
