Superstitious Sehwag needs no jersey number

A day after MiD DAY carried a story that India dasher Virender Sehwag preferred not to wear a number on the his jersey, famous numerologist Sanjay Jumaani claimed that the opening batsman had done so on his insistence

"Sehwag has taken off the number (44) at my behest and has made a comeback since," Jumaani wrote in a e-mail yesterday.u00a0

"Sehwag used to average a mere 28 while wearing 44 and at the same time in Tests, where there was no Jersey No 44, he was averaging 55. We also warned him that he could lose his place in the side, which he eventually did. However, soon after taking off 44, since a year and a half, he has averaged nearly 60," added Jumaani.

Sehwag scored a superb 175 in the opening World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday which India went on to win by 87 runs. However, the absence of a number on the back of his jersey, unlike his India teammates, did not go unnoticed by the tournament organisers ufffd the International Cricket Council. ICC spokesperson Colin Gibson told MiD DAY that the match referee did speak to the Indian team manager about this issue.
