Expecting the South Africans to at least reach the semi-finals of the ICC World T20 is nothing new. Similar expectations have also been expressed in the past, but they have faltered at the final hurdle. Hence, the chokers tag will be talked about at the World T20 event too.
Skipper Faf du Plessis said yesterday: "The only way you can ever get the monkey off your back is if you win a trophy. In T20 cricket, there is not much time to even think of stuff like that. But one day, when that changes, people will stop asking that question. For now, this team has not been thinking about that (chokers tag) all.
"The important thing for me in the build-up to this World Cup is that the team has stood up and done well in the real pressure moments.
"Anyway, you can get rid of that when you manage to perform under pressure. For me, it is about our preparation which has been really good and then if it happens, hopefully we will have to stop answering the question," said the South African skipper on the eve of their first warm-up match against India.
"We have shown over a period of time that we play better in pressure moments and we have done that well as a T20 team. So, I would like to think we got to overcome that hurdle mentally," he added.
At the 2015 World Cup, the South African team was reduced to tears after their heart-breaking loss to New Zealand in the thrilling semi-final which could have swung either way.
