We got out of jail, admits relieved Strauss

England skipper Andrew Strauss admitted his error-plagued side had got out of jail after beating a brave Netherlands by six wickets in the World Cup on Tuesday.

The Dutch posted a challenging total of 292-6 on the back of a fine century from Ryan ten Doeschate, a score helped by some poor bowling and slapstick English fielding.

Strauss then hit a composed 88 as England reached their target with eight balls to spare in this Group B clash.

"Thankfully the batsmen got us out of jail," said the England captain, who enjoyed a century stand with Kevin Pietersen to set England on their way.

"We got a lot of things wrong with our bowling and we let them off the hook three or four times in the field as well so it was a very poor 50 overs."

But he added: "It was an outstanding wicket for one-day cricket. We always knew if we kept wickets in hand we'd have a good chance of chasing it down."

England's next challenge is against hosts India at Bangalore on Sunday.

"We've got to take this on the chin, learn from it pretty quickly because you can't afford to do that too often.

"We are very excited about the India game. It's going to be an amazing atmosphere and a great occasion. Hopefully we can spoil an Indian party there."

Netherlands captain Peter Borren blamed his bowlers for handing England too many opportunities to chip away at their total.

"Obviously 292 was a good score. I thought it was competitive, but I'm not sure if we made them work as hard as we possibly could have for the runs," he said.

"We started off a bit rusty (in the field) but came back all right. I think generally we bowled two sides of the wicket at times and that cost us," he added.

"I thought Ryan batted beautifully, he created the foundation for the rest of us to work around. We struggled defending it and credit to them, they played well."
