"He is very ill and I doubt whether he will be alive on his birthday," said Gordon's son Brian (70) from Johannesburg.
Gordon is the first Test cricketer to complete a century in life and is the only surviving member of the Timeless Test between South Africa and England at Durban in 1939.
"He was known as the fittest player in his team, but at this age, his health is deteriorating every single day.
He had been to hospital a number of times," said Brian.
Former SA captain Dr Ali Bacher, who also headed his country's cricket board, said: "I just spoke to his son Brian. Norman will be 103 today.
I had hoped to take him out for lunch on his birthday, but it is not possible. Norman remains indoors and spends most of the time in his bed.
"Knowing his determination I will put money on the fact that he will be undefeated on August 6."
