According to a report in cricket.com.au, Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has achieved one of cricket's rarest feats, hitting six sixes in an over during a match in Brisbane on Wednesday.
Stoinis, 25, appearing for the National Performance Squad (NPS), slammed six sixes against Brendan Smith of the National Indigenous Squad, with Smith conceding 37 runs in that over as his first delivery was deemed a wide.
According to the report, Stoinis smacked six consecutive maximums over the short leg-side boundary in the 37th over with the Bushrangers in a spot of bother at 5-165. The first three deliveries were dispatched over mid-wicket and the next three sent over the rope at long-on.
Stoinis ended up scoring 121 off 73 balls, with eight boundaries and ten sixes in his innings. The NPS, with stars like Mathew Wade, James Pattinson and Gurinder Sandhu, won the 50-over match by 42 runs. Stoinis took 1-20 from five overs, while Smith scored 39 in the chase, cricket.com.au reported.
The feat having taken place in a a non-sanctioned practice match at the Allan Border Field may not find a place in cricket record books.
The rare feat has been achieved before by just four other players with Sir Gary Sobers being the first when he smashed Glamorgan's Malcolm Nash for half-a-dozen sixes in an over in 1968. Seventeen years later, former India all-rounder Ravi Shastri repeated the act by thrashing Baroda's Tilak Raj in a Ranji Trophy match.
South African opener Herschelle Gibbs, though, was the first player to achieve the feat in an international match. He took Netherlands spinner Daan van Bunge to the cleaners at the 2007 World Cup, while India's Yuvraj Singh took 36 off an over bowled by England's Stuart Broad at the 2007 World Twenty20 in Durban.
West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard matched the feat last year, but he too did it in a non-sanctioned match, it has not been recognised by the official cricket record books.
