Washington Sundar

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s off-spinner Washington Sundar has split the webbing between thumb and first finger on his bowling hand and could need one week to recover, head coach Tom Moody said after the team halted Gujarat Titans’ winning run at the DY Patil Stadium on Monday night.

“Washington has torn the webbing between thumb and the first finger in his right hand. We will monitor him over the next 2-3 days. Hopefully it won’t be a significant blow, but I imagine it will take a week or so to settle down,” said Moody after Sunrisers defeated the Titans by eight wickets with five balls to spare.

The defeat was the first for new franchise Titans after three straight wins while for the Sunrisers it was their second in four games, both coming back to back.

Sunrisers’ next outing is scheduled against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on April 16. But even if Sundar is not available Sunrisers have South Africa’s Aiden Markram to fall upon to bowl off spin.

“We are playing one specialist spinner [Sundar] and consider Markram as a good sixth option. Most of the teams we had played so far had quite a few left handers at the top of the order. It has suited us to have the option of bowling eight overs of off spin if required,” said Moody.
