The Manchester United striker has flopped in South Africa, and his performances have arguably been the low-point of the Three Lions' campaign after two dreadful, goalless displays. Frustrated at his lack of impact, the angry broadside Rooney sent towards the nation's supporters at the end of the 0-0 draw with Algeria only served to sharpen the critics' knives.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, former Chelsea centre forward Cascarino argued Capello must drop Rooney for today's crunch Group C clash with Slovenia to make him "angry" and re-discover his vigour. "I'd want to make him angry. A lot of people say Wayne is too angry, but I'd suggest he needs to get back to being really angry again," Cascarino said.

"If he's put on the bench he will scare the life out of Slovenia. Because deep down, it'll be the first kick in the teeth he's had as a football player.

"Sometimes you have to make these incredible decisions that might benefit the team. I think the bigger gamble at the moment is starting with Wayne.

"I'd rather have an angry Wayne coming on, than an in-different one starting."
