The engagement was done and the dates were finalised. Family and friends had started buying dresses for the big occasion. Invitation cards were on their way out from the printer.
A 14-course menu was being planned for the wedding of Vikram Singh and Anuradha. Along came the Commonwealth Games (CWG) hurricane.
Now, Vikram Singh and Anuradha will not be able to tie the nuptial knot on October 9, as they had planned. In view of the terror threat and heightened security during the Games in the national capital, both families don't want to take any chance. They have decided to postpone the marriage by a month. Now the marriage has been rescheduled for November 15.u00a0
"Games have been a talking point for so many days. Security has been tightened and there have been so many restrictions. We realised that organising a marriage in such a scenario would not be a wise decision. Firstly, the guests coming to Delhi will have to face a lot of problems in moving inside the city. Secondly, we also fear that some untoward event might take place. Keeping all these things into in mind, we have shifted the marriage dates," said Singh, the bridegroom, who works as a software engineer in Noida.
The Games had forced cancellations of 300-odd bookings in private banquets and MCD run community halls. Sushil Kumar, manager of a private banquet run in South Delhi said, "From the first week of September, we have witnessed continuous cancellations, especially during the dates when Games are held. Most of the cancellations done were for October 9, 11 and 13."
"Everyone wants to enjoy without restrictions. But in such conditions, it would have been very difficult. Even we would have had problems in arranging everything. Many farmhouses around ours have witnessed the same trend. Most of the dates booked for various occasions stand cancelled today," said Rajat Sisodiah, owner of a farmhouse in Mehrauli.
