However, he was far behind Germany’s Robert Harding who took gold in the event with a distance of 68.27m. The silver went to Iran’s Ehsan Hadadi who threw the disc 68.18m away, while the bronze went to Estonia’s Gerda Kanter who attained his season’s best throw of 68.03m.

Harting celebrated his victory by clearing several of the the barriers set up for the women’s 100m hurdles and did so with style for such a big man. Hadadi had taken the lead in the first round with a throw of 68.18m while both Harting and Lithuania's two-time Olympic champion Virgilius Alekna also put down markers in the opening salvo.

Gowda is only the second Indian to make it to the finals of the track and field events at the ongoing Games. He did so a day after Krishna Poonia finished seventh in women’s discus throw. Only five other Indians — Milkha Singh (400m), Gurbachan Singh Randhawa (110m hurdles), Sriram Singh (800m), P T Usha (400m hurdles) and Anju Bobby George (Long Jump) — have previously made it to the final round of Olympics’ track and field events.
