Horse d'oeuvre: Filly vs the rest for turf's big one

If the pre-race hype and excitement is anything to go by, it might be Beckett vs Jacqueline at the prestigious Vandrevala Foundation Turf Invitation Cup to be run at the Mahalaxmi racecourse on Sunday, March 7. Yet, there is Bruckner who is fast improving and Madhur Bajaj's Native Knight who was an impressive third in the recent Indian Derby. Would the law of averages catch up with wonder filly Jacqueline who has already won four Classics this season?

This was the subject of some delicious pre-race debate during the Tuesday night launch of the race. The glitzy launch, in the racecourse's paddock, had equine owners and officials eager to talk about the Invitation Cup that Mumbai hosts once in five years.

The Invitation Cup would cap off a weekend of races like the Vandrevala Foundation Stayers' Cup and the Vandrevala Foundation Sprinters' Cup. The feature race on Sunday, The Indian Turf Invitation Cup to be run at 5 pm, sees the cream of the country's four-year-olds battle it out for the Cup. The Invitation Cup is a contest of champions in which only well-bred horses with a history of winning compete to decide the best four-year-olds in the country.
