How India's super sixers packed a punch

Indian boxing dominated the final day of the Commonwealth Championships at the Talkatora Stadium here yesterday as six gold medals -- Paramjeet Samota (+91 kg), Amandeep Singh (49 kg), Suranjoy Singh (52 kg), Jai Bhagwan (60 kg), Vijender Singh (75 kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81 kg) -- were bagged by the hosts.

Samota opened the account with a 7:3 win over New Zealander Joseph Parker. Paramjeet later revealed his attacking strategy. "I wanted to maintain the pace of my attack till the end," he said.

Then, Amandeep's defensive plan helped India clinch it's second gold. He beat Kenya's Peter Mungai 3:0. "I wanted to play smart rather than attack," the 25-year-old railway employee said. Suranjoy Singh then stepped in and stepped out as quickly with India's third gold. Just one punch from the Manipuri had his opponent Oliver Lavigi of Mauritius down on the mat. Jai Bhagwan dominated the fourth final against Bahamas' Valentino Knowels to emerge a 6-2 winner for Gold No 4. Then came the showstealer of the day, Vijender Singh vs England's Frank Buglioni. Frank, who made Vijender bleed twice during the bout, started off well but then fizzled out as the Indian emerged a 13:3 victor. "The bleeding was heavy, and I was worried that the referee might call me back. The public's 'Jai Ho' spurred me on," Vijender said.

Thereafter, Dinesh Kumar got a walkover against Scotland's Callum Johnson for Gold No 6.
