Even as the world talks about American Olympic gold medal-winning athlete Bruce Jenner's sex change, the 65-year-old revealed how ex-wife Kris (59) wasn't the kindest of souls.

Just the other day, Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce) was featured on the cover of fashion magazine Vanity Fair.

Jenner and Kris were married for 23 years before their divorce was finalised in December last year.

It is in one of the special episodes of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' that Jenner opened up about his sex change. It is an American reality television series aired on E! since October 14, 2007. It focuses on the personal and professional lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family.

"The first 15 years I felt she needed me more because I was the breadwinner. Then really around the show, when that hit and she was running the whole show and getting credit for it and she had her own money, she didn't need me as much from that standpoint... I think in a lot of ways she became less tolerant of me," Jenner was quoted as saying by Vanity Fair.

"A lot of times she wasn't very nice. People would see how I got mistreated. She controlled the money, all that kind of stuff," Jenner added.

Kris was not supportive when Jenner expressed his intention to become a woman. Kris was quoted as saying by Vanity Fair: "It was like the most passive-aggressive thing I think I ever experienced.

He was married to me and he wasn't who he wanted to be so he was miserable… All I was doing was working very hard for my family so that we could all have a wonderful future, and he was pissed off."

Caitlyn said their relationship came to an end not just because of the gender change. "Twenty per cent was gender and 80 per cent was the way I was treated."

Caitlyn's 88-year-old mother, Esther supported the decision, but said she would continue to call her Bruce and not Caitlyn. "I still have to call him Bruce. His father and I named him that. It's going to be a struggle for me to get used to the change, but happily so. I'm very happy for him – or her!" Mrs Jenner said.

The new Twitter account under Caitlyn Jenner saw a record one million followers within four hours after it was created. She shared the Vanity Fair cover on her page and captioned it: "I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self.

Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me." Now, Caitlyn has received support from not just the family but also celebrities like US President Barack Obama and singer Lady Gaga.
