The third edition of the national level Vasai-Virar Mayor's Marathon will be flagged off on Sunday, October 27, 2013
The cream of the country’s long distance talent is expected to grace the event. More than 10,000 athletes are expected to run across the stretch of 42 kms.u00a0

More than 45,000 people are expected to cheer them at the event. It will see thousands of serious, amateur participants from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai as well as the other districts. A number of well-known long distance runners from foreign countries are also expected to participate. There is 21 km marathon for men and women, in which veteran athletes who are above 50 years are also running.
Categories include below-18, below-14, below-12 for locals. There will be senior citizen and wheelchair runs as well. Organised by the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation and the Vasai Taluka Kala Krida Vikas Mandal, the event gained National status in 2012. Permission to conduct the event on a National level has been sought from the Athletic Federation of India (AFI), according to Narayan Mankar, Mayor of the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation at a press conference recently in the presence of Kshitij Thakur, the MLA from that region andu00a0Rajiv Patil, the first mayor of VVMC.u00a0
