Ironically, around the same month, Wozniacki was supposed to be walking down the aisle, but the wedding was shockingly called off by golfing star Rory McIlroy in May.
The 24-year-old tennis star, now ranked World No 13, will run as an ambassador of Team for Kids along with reigning Boston Marathon champion Meb Keflezighi.
“People ask me, ‘Why don’t you just run a 5K or 10K?’ I’m like, ‘Well, I do that all the time, so it wouldn’t really be a challenge,’” Wozniacki was quoted as saying on Thursday. “This is really something I need to put my mind to.”
Wozniacki also insisted she is not seeking this challenge in an attempt to distract herself from her personal problems.
“Tennis helped me just get through the tough times,” she said. “Now I’m just feeling happy and I wanted to do something good for others. This had nothing really to do with my personal life. It was something I was passionate about.”
Plenty of retired athletes have run marathons, but Wozniacki didn’t want to wait till then. “When an idea pops into my head, I kind of go for it,” she said. “I know that if I keep pushing it back, I will never do it.”
