The five-time world champion said she was upset with AIBA’s (International Amateur Boxing Association) decision to suspend the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF). “I was very upset when I heard about the news.

I hope this issue is resolved because it will affect the youngsters. I have proved myself, but what about the future of these young boxers? ” asked Mary.

Crime against women
Speaking of rising crime against women in India, the 30-year-old Manipuri recalled a personal experience as an 18-year-old. “Once, I was travelling by rickshaw alone. I was wearing a traditional Manipuri dress and going to church.

The people sitting in the rickshaw started harassing me and the area was deserted. I had just started learning boxing so I got down and began hitting these guys. Soon a couple of football coaches, who were passing by, also joined me in thrashing them.

But if I didn’t know boxing, I don’t know what would have happened. I urge young girls to train in martial arts for their own safety,” said the champion pugilist.
