Indian athletes participating in the ninth edition of the Mumbai Marathon can now run with a dream of qualifying at this year's London Olympics. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) gave national status to the January 15 race yesterday.
Vivek Singh, Joint MD of Procam International, the promoters of the event, expressed happiness on getting AFI's backing again. AFI withdrew support in the last edition over financial issues. "We were in regular talks with the AFI.
I am glad that we were able to convince them and sought out the issue. After getting a gold label status from the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), I don't find any reason for them not to back the event. We have agreed to give them their royalty. We will also be supporting their national senior and junior men's open," Singh informed.
