A Few days after Virender Sehwag was quoted as saying that he was not interested in the India captaincy, the national selectors yesterday named him skipper of the Rest of India team which will take on Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup tie in Nagpur from October 1.
In fact, Sehwag was not even consulted before being named as the RoI captain. "I have not been told (about the captaincy) but I will be happy to lead the team," Sehwag told MiD DAY yesterday evening. The Delhi dasher will miss the Champions Trophy which starts in South Africa later this month due to a shoulder injury for which he underwent surgery during the ICC World T20 in England.
Will Sehwag be fit to take the field on October 1 in Chennai? "I am improving everyday. At the moment, I'm throwing the ball from 30 yards. I am sure my situation will be much better from October 1," said Sehwag.
Asked why did they appoint Sehwag, who is not keen on leading a team, one of the selectors said: "We had to do our job first and that was to pick a good team. We would have dealt with it had Sehwag refused to lead.
"And remember, he has not informed us about his reluctancy to lead a team. That's why we did not check with him."
