The top seeds were upset 4-6, 6-3, 7-10 by Australian-Brazilian pair of Chris Guccione and Andre Sa on the outdoor grass courts of the Nottingham Tennis Centre.
Paes, with his 100th doubles partner Granollers, did not play to their potential as they lasted only an hour and 16 minutes in the last eight encounter. After sharing the first two sets, it all boiled down to the super tie-break where the unseeded Australian-Brazilian pair had as many as six matchpoints!
The top seeds saved four but that was all they could manage as Guccione and Sa converted their fifth opportunity to enter the semifinals of the tournament.
It was an evenly matched contest where Guccione and Sa were better just when it mattered, the super tie-break.
