Relay gold for Jamaica but USA flop

Jamaica took gold in the women's 4x100 metres event on Saturday in the World Athletics Championship here after the USA's dreadful run in the relay continued when the women's team failed to finish their heat at the IAAF World Athletics Championships.

Earlier in the heats, USA's women's 200 metres finalist Muna Lee struggled to get hold of the baton on the second handover from Alexandria Anderson and stumbled before pulling up abruptly, holding her left hamstring and collapsing to the ground.

The men's team had exited on Friday when, having won their heat, they were disqualified after the British team protested over a faulty handover on the final leg between Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton.

Their performances here are a replica of last year's Olympics where neither team reached the final or indeed finished their heat with Patton involved in a dreadful handover to Tyson Gay.

The Bahamas (42.29) took silver, while Germany claimed bronze (42.87) in the women's 4X100m final.

Meanwhile, USA'su00a0 4x400m relay team had no problems in booking their final berth on Saturday.

The quartet Lionel Larry, Kerron Clement, Bershawn Jackson and Angelo Taylor ran the race in 3min 01.40sec.
