Sania, Hingis reclaim No 1 spot with semi-final win in Rome

Rome: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis reclaimed the number one spot in the teams ranking after reaching the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia with a hard-fought 6-2 7-6(5) win over Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik, on Saturday.

The top seeded Indo-Swiss pair, which surrendered the top spot after defeats in Stuttgart and Madrid, saved a set point in the second set tie-break. Awaiting them in the final will be No 3 seeds Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic, who beat No 8 seeds Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first semifinal of the day, 6-2 6-4.


Halep advances
Meanwhile, in the women’s singles, second seed Simona Halep made light work of Alexandra Dulgheru to win 6-1, 6-0 and line up a semi-final with Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro. Suarez-Navarro made sure of her place in the last eight with a 6-3, 6-2 win over fourth seed Petra Kvitova.

Meanwhile, third seed Maria Sharapova will face Daria Gavrilova after she beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3,6-2.
Qualifier Gavrilova made it into the last four with a 6-2 6-4 victory against American Christina McHale.
