The police said the official belonged to the German firm GmbH that has been contracted to provide the cables for the tensile roof at the stadium.
The technician Shyam Sundar, an electrician, was caught while trying to get inside at gate number 14 of the stadium at around 11:15 am along with his German employer.
A volunteer at the stadium confirmed that Sundar has been arrested and an FIR registered at the Lodhi Colony police station.
"They were trying to enter through gate number 14 but the alert security personnel spotted the anomaly and Sundar was stopped there and then," the volunteer told MiD DAY.
It was found that Sundar was trying to get inside on somebody else's accreditation card. He was handed over to the police and a case under section 419 IPC was lodged against him. He has been booked for impersonation, the sources said.
Sources said further investigations into the matter are on and more arrests can happen.
They said interrogation on Sundar until now suggest that due to lack of accreditation cards, the employer tried to take Sundar inside using someone else's I-card to finish the work as the Opening ceremony is due on Sunday.
Apart from Opening and Closing ceremonies, track and field and marathon, lawn balls and weight lifting event would be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
