Ruqqaiya Shaikh slammed six out of the eight goals scored by Duruelo Convent School (Bandra) against Guru Nanak School (Sion) to win the final of the girls under-14 inter-school hockey tournament
Ruqqaiya Shaikh slammed six out of the eight goals scored by Duruelo Convent School (Bandra) against Guru Nanak School (Sion) to win the final of the girls under-14 inter-school hockey tournament for the fourth consecutive year yesterday.
Thirteen-year-old Ruqqaiya also plays for the Maharashtra state team. She scored 18 goals in five matches in this competition and also received the 'best player of the tournament' award.
"I am glad I could have scored 10 goals but I missed plenty of chances. Last year, I didn't get the best player award so I was a little disappointed, but overall our team has won this tournament for the fourth time and we are very happy," said Ruqqaiya.
Duruelo may have won by a convincing margin, but their opponents were no pushovers. "We were concerned about Guru Nanak as they were playing very well in this tournament but we got a very good result," said Duruelo coach Ignatius D'Souza.
Meanwhile, Don Bosco 'A' defeated Don Bosco 'B' 2-0 to win the boys under-12 title. Jonathan Fernandes scored the first goal followed by Keanu D'Souza.
In the boys under-10 section, Sahil Ambedka scored the only goal for Don Bosco against St Stanislaus in the final.
