Srikar impresses Anand

Viswanathan Anand played chess against 40 players simultaneously in Hyderabad yesterday. All lost except for a 14-year Srikar Varadaraj, who held the world champion to a draw.

Anand felt that the standard of chess was extremely high and the last 10 players held on very tenaciously.

"Playing with the participants here was more of a roller coaster ride while playing against one person is controlled," said Anand, adding, "I was completely busted. A lot of people here played very well." During the question and answer round, Anand drew a correlation of chess with mathematics. "Mathematics is similar to chess. If kids get fascinated in mathematics early, it stays for long just like in chess," he said.
