The two-time finalist suffered an early wobble as Wickmayer shocked her opponent with some classy strokes to go a break up in the opening set. However, a composed Azarenka held the serve in her next three games and found a break of her own, but Wickmayer broke back instantly.
In another match, Samantha Stosur, needing just 51 minutes, produced a devastating display to power her way into the third round with a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win over Russian Evgeniya Rodina at Flushing Meadows.
Stosur next plays Italian 16th seed Sara Errani, who beat Jelena Ostapenko 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, for a place in the last 16.
