Wozniacki, who has been the World No 1 despite never having won a Grand Slam, was the only top 12 player left in her half of the draw.
But she blew her chance to secure a quarter-final spot by losing to Spanish 20th seed Muguruza. Muguruza made 33 unforced errors to Wozniacki's 16, but crucially hit 29 winners to Wozniacki's 10.

It is the third time the Spanish number two has reached a Grand Slam quarter-final, having made the Last Eight at the French Open in 2014 and this year. She will face Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky for a place in the semi-finals.
Wozniacki, twice a US Open finalist, has now reached the fourth round at the All England Club five times without ever progressing. The result means that at least one player from outside the top 12 will definitely make the Wimbledon women's final on Saturday.
