Whenever we watch Jon Favreau's 2014 movie Chef, we always wish for someone to organise a food truck festival in the pleasant winters of this city. And Mulund resident Ronil Boricha seems to have heard our prayers, since he is organising the Mumbai Food Truck Festival (MFTF) in the eastern suburb this weekend.
"I wanted to open a food truck. Somehow, this led me to work on MFTF. We [a team of 22 people] took less than a month to organise it. Since I live in Mulund, we picked the suburb as the venue," says the 24-year-old organiser. Boricha tells us that their first target was to procure all the licences and permissions (a nagging problem that troubled Bandra's food truck park), which was relatively easy as the festival is a two-day affair.
Bombay dogs
Close to 40 food trucks and 80 stalls will be on offer at the fest, serving 30 different cuisines. To make it a complete experience, stand-up artistes from SNG Comedy will stage a performance, and actor-turned-DJ, Ali Merchant will spin some chill tracks. There will also be performances by music bands Across Seconds and MH43. Those who love spoken word performances can attend one by Unerase Poetry.
To be held in a large open-air space, people with children can look forward to a 10,000-sq ft kids' zone. There will also be a VIP zone with butler services, where everything will be served on the table.
Broken vada pav
Foodies who regularly eat out in the city can look forward to sampling fare whipped up by food trucks from Pune, including L'dorado, Anda Ground and Marination, which will offer pizzas, burgers and egg dishes.
Boricha tells us that there won't be any alcohol on offer in their first edition. But the many food stalls will ensure that various different taste preferences are met. These include chaat from local legend Jhulelal Pani Puri, Mughal dishes from Charcoal Biryani, bubble waffles by Cheat Day, jacket potatoes by Potato Hut, funky dosas from Mawali Bhai Dosa, ice creams by Brain Freeze, and desserts from chains such as Mad Over Donuts and Belgian Waffle. For Jain food options, try Monopoly, that offers fusion food such as pani puri pizza and juices. For a kick of sugar, try ice cream shakes by Snowbird. Here are five of our top picks:
