Major fire near Slumdog kids' home

A major fire swept through Bandra's Behramnagar slums early this morning.

This slum is adjacent to the Garibnagar slums, which is home to Slumdog stars Mohammed Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali Qureshi.

The fire started at around 3.30 am, and residents believe that a cylinder blast is to blame for it.

Though 22 water tankers had reached the spot, they were unable to approach the fire because of the narrow alleys.

The fire was spreading towards Garibnagar and more cylinder blasts could be heard at the time the paper went to press.

Sofia Khan, who lives in a nearby building, and had vacated her home soon after the fire had started, said, "As soon as we heard about the fire, we grabbed all our important papers, cash and cylinder and left the house."

The residents were hoping that the rain gods would prove merciful and halt the fire.
