According to the police, the incident occurred in Club Escape, located on New Link Road in Andheri (West), at around 12.15 am yesterday. The accused, Vikrant Kumar Kallodi (50), was drunk. A 25-year-old woman was standing near the manager’s counter and typing a text message on her mobile phone.

Seeing her, Kallodi stood beside her and tried peeping into her screen to see what she was typing. When she took objection to his snooping, the diamond broker grabbed her by her hand and tapped her on the head.

The woman immediately reported the misbehaviour to the pub manager Jitendra Jha, who asked Kallodi to apologise to the patron. Kallodi was incensed on being asked to say sorry and an argument ensued with the manager.

“This eventually turned into a scuffle and, in a fit of rage, the drunk Kallodi took out his licenced revolver and opened fire. The bullet brushed past Jha’s leg and hit the floor. The police were called and a patrolling van reached the pub within 10 minutes,” said P Medhe, senior police inspector at Amboli police station.

Jha was immediately rushed to the Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri (West). He confirmed the incident to mid-day and was discharged from the hospital yesterday. The woman is originally from Madhya Pradesh and had come to Mumbai a week ago in search of employment, after completing her BTech. She stays as a paying guest in the Four Bungalows area.

The accused was arrested on charges of attempt to murder and molestation of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced in court today. He lives in Lokhandwala, Andheri (West) with his family and used to run a jewellery shop in the same area.
