After recording a dip on Monday, daily infections crossed 60,000 in Maharashtra on Tuesday, while deaths shot up beyond 500, a first for the state. Mumbai’s cases remained under 10,000, and the city saw fewer than 40 fatalities. The state recorded 62,097 new cases, taking the total tally to 39.01 lakh. With the addition of 519 deaths, the overall count has touched 61,343.


Mumbai reported 7,192 fresh cases and the number for MMR was 16,202. The Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivali Corporation recorded 1,373, 968 and 1,200, respectively.


The mortality rate of Maharashtra was about 1.55 per cent, though rising cases have pushed up the death data. The number of deaths due to other causes was 1,696. These are the cases where patients were positive before testing negative but later died of other complications.


Mumbai topped the fatality chart in the state with 34 deaths, while MMR recorded 115 deaths, including Mumbai. While the civic body recorded 35 deaths, the state put the figure at 34. Of these, 16 patients were suffering from other ailments and 20 victims were senior citizens.

The state’s recovery rate stands at 81.14 per cent with 54,224 patients discharged across the state. The state has 6,83,856 active cases. It has carried out 2.43 crore tests since March 2020, witnessing a 16.27 per cent positivity ratio.

Mumbai’s recovery rate now stands at 84 per cent and the doubling rate is 47days, both improving since last week. The city’s overall growth rate stands at 1.44 per cent. The city has so far recorded 5.9 lakh cases and has 83,934 infections. Over 50.2 lakh tests have been carried out in Mumbai since the pandemic broke out.

The city saw 9,641 patients being discharged on Tuesday, which is more than the new daily cases.
