The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to present the annual budget on Saturday and it is likely to touch the Rs 50,000-crore mark. The BMC’s annual budget this year will be presented by the municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal


Every year, there is a 10 per cent increase in the BMC budget, this year as well it is expected to reach up to Rs 50,000 crore. In 2021-22, the Budget had a total outlay of Rs 39,083 crore while in 2022-23, the Budget had a total outlay of Rs 45,949 crore.


Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday directed the BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal (Administrator) to prioritise pollution control, strengthening of the health system, administration transparency, and the city's beautification while making the municipal corporation's budget.

Here's all you need to know ahead of the BMC Budget 2023:

  • A possibility of announcements of many big projects this time.
  • This year’s BMC budget is likely to revolve around road concretisation, coastal road and beautification projects
  • The budget is also expected to make provisions for Bhandup multispeciality hospital, Siddharth Hospital at Goregaon, Oshiwara maternity hospital as well as seven Sewage Treatment Plants at Worli, Bandra, Dharavi, Versova, Malad, Bhandup and Ghatkopar
  • The budget may also have an emphasis on environmental measures as Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that air purifier towers should be installed in Mumbai
  • There may not be new direct taxes on the citizens in this year's budget
  • In a meeting earlier this week, CM Eknath Shinde instructed BMC to start Skill Development Center in municipal schools for class IX and X students and also to increase their number in view of the demand of Mumbai Public Schools
  • In the meeting, CM Shinde asserted that Mumbaikars should experience good governance.
  • CM Shinde also said that along with the beautification of the Mumbai metropolis, provision should be made in the budget through the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to enable women's self-help groups to provide relief to common Mumbaikars in terms of communication, infrastructure, congestion and traffic control.
