Covid-19 cases rise in Mumbai, but test positivity rate, fatalities dip

Mumbai saw a rise in new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday but the test positivity rate and fatalities dipped as compared to Monday. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report, 575 new cases were reported across Mumbai on Tuesday. The TPR was 2.42 per cent, a little less than Monday’s TPR, which was 2.63 per cent.


After recording the lowest daily Covid-19 numbers in the second wave on June 3, Mumbai saw a rise in cases earlier last week but the numbers remained below the 1,000 mark. June 6 was for the first time in the second wave that the TPR dipped below 3. The doubling rate has continued to significantly improve and is now at 702 days.


There were 14 Covid-19 fatalities across Mumbai on Tuesday. Of these, seven patients had comorbidities, seven deaths were of those over 60 while six deaths were in the 40-60 age group. On June 8, the city had reported single digit Covid-19 fatalities for the first time in the second wave.


The city’s recovery rate continues to be at 95 per cent and there were 718 people who recovered and were discharged on Tuesday. 

The state also saw a significant rise in Covid-19 fatalities. As per the state report, 9,350 new cases were reported. The state saw 388 deaths on Tuesday. The state’s case fatality rate has been seeing a steady rise and on Tuesday, it was 1.93 per cent. At least 15,176 people recovered and got discharged on Tuesday. Currently the state has 1.38 lakh active cases.

Like the state, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also saw a significant rise in new cases and  fatalities. The MMR reported 1,971 cases on Tuesday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Palghar with 290 and Raigad with 494 reported the maximum new cases in MMR.

Thane reported 69 new cases while Kalyan-Dombivli saw 128 cases and Navi Mumbai reported 99 new cases on Tuesday. MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 113 Covid-19 fatalities. While Palghar registered 54 deaths, Raigad reported 33 deaths, the highest in MMR. Panvel reported eight deaths and Navi Mumbai witnessed two deaths.
