The city so far has 9,018 breakthrough infections of Covid-19, according to the data of the civic body. However, the rate of infection was merely 0.31 per cent and the majority of them contracted the virus 15 days after taking their second vaccine dose, it added.

A breakthrough case is when a person gets an infection even after being fully vaccinated against it. “The infection caused after two doses of vaccine has been very minimal and the citizens have also recovered soon. The rate of infection among such a population is hardly 0.31 per cent,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani.
Currently, the city has administered over 1 crore doses. While 71 lakh beneficiaries have received their first dose so far, more than 28 lakh citizens are fully vaccinated. There are around 90 lakh citizens eligible for Covid-19 vaccination at present.

Out of the 28 lakh fully vaccinated citizens, 6,106 contracted the novel Coronavirus 15 days after getting fully inoculated, while 2,912 were affected within 15 days of taking their second dose. Civic officials said the low rate of infection is the only sigh of relief and that there is no cause for worry, as seriousness of breakthrough infections was also very low.
However, civic sources said there is no data available with them about Covid-19 casualties reported among citizens who had completed both the vaccine doses. A civic official from the BMC's health department, on condition of anonymity, said, “We have no such data available with us right now and we are yet to compile it. We do not recollect an incident where a fully vaccinated person passed away [due to Covid-19], but we are not sure and will have to check our records.”

While the civic officials are hesitating to share data on deaths, it is said that they do not want citizens to shy from vaccination, as the drive has finally picked up. To collect foolproof data on breakthrough infections, the BMC has introduced a new column in the form seeking the patient’s history at the time of admission to hospitals. From now on, the Covid-affected patients will have to mention about their vaccination status - the vaccine they took and the number of doses taken, along with dates.
