A committee of medical experts will meet to assess the likely reasons for the death of a senior citizen after he was injected with the first dose of an anti-COVID vaccine on Monday afternoon.

The 68-year-old man became unconscious after he was administered Covishield vaccine at 3.31 pm at a Jogeshwari vaccine facility. He was rushed to the intensive care unit of the same hospital for treatment. But the man was declared dead at 5.05 pm.

Authorities informed the police and sent the body to JJ hospital for a post-mortem, said civic officials. The autopsy on the elderly person’s body was done on Tuesday.

“An expert medical committee has been constituted to conduct a causality assessment of the adverse event after vaccination. The meeting will be held immediately to evaluate the reasons for the sudden death,” said a BMC official.

Meanwhile, over 43,000 received vaccine shots on Tuesday, which was more than the previous day. The doses are being administered at vaccination centres at 30 public hospitals and 38 private facilities across the city.

So far, 3,81,707 people have taken their first dose of vaccines, including 1,19,174 health workers, 1,10,770 frontline workers, 1,36,491 senior citizens and 15,272 people aged between 45 and 59 years with comorbidities. Healthcare employees and frontline workers who have taken their second dose number 52,810.

As per information shared by the BMC, beneficiaries usually show mild symptoms like pain at the inoculation site, low-grade fever, weakness and dizziness. Ever since the vaccination drive started in the city, only 16 people have been admitted to the hospital for one or two days.

Of the 43,581 people who got vaccines on Tuesday, there were 30,624 senior citizens and 3,876 comorbid beneficiaries.
