Jai Prakash Agarwal re-elected Delhi Congress chief on Tuesday
Jai Prakash Agarwal was taking stock of the preparations for the one-day All India Congress Committee (AICC) session at the Talkatora Stadium when he got a call from the party high-command.
Playing first chair: Agarwal is known as a rival of Sheila Dikshit.
"Mr Agarwal, you've been re-elected the president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC)," he was told.
Since then, the stop has not stopped ringing for the veteran Delhi politician. In an exclusive chat with MiD DAY, Agarwal said he would continue to strengthen the party organisation in the state and rubbished his reported 'rivalry' with Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
While he was attending several calls, this correspondent asked him whether Dikshit congratulated him or not. He said he was sure that Dikshit would call and asserted that he himself would pay her a visit.
Agarwal refused to admit that the corruption in the Commonwealth Games has dented the image of the party. "Everybody had a limited role to play and a comprehensive probe is on. Nobody was solely responsible for making the event a success and therefore nobody could be individually held accountable for the whole rot," he said.
Talking about his popularity in the party ranks, a confident Agarwal averred: "I am no armchair politician. I am a grassroot worker and closely associated with the ground realities. I closely associate myself with the party workers and therefore, they remain firmly behind me."
