"It is suffocating here. I am dying," were the last words spoken by Savita, who is one of the nine who perished in the fire.

Savitha, a senior relationship manager with Religare Macquaria Company, was meeting a client at the seven-storey Carlton Towers, when the fire broke out. On Wednesday afternoon, as the shocked family sat waiting for Savitha's body to be brought from the Bowring Hospital, they remembered the girl, whom they believed "destiny had snatched."

"She was God's gift to us. We still can't believe it has happened to her," said Jayashree, Savitha's mother.

Sujitha, Savitha's younger sister said, "I have lost a friend. On occasions when no one in the family stood by me, she stood by me like a rock."

The family is shocked that Savitha's watch, mangalsuthra, credit cards and other valuables were missing when her body reached them. "Action should be taken against the building authorities. They should have had sand bags ready in order to cope with such emergencies," said Meera Sukumar, Savitha's aunt.
