Out of the frying pan and into the fire. 17-year-old Simi (name changed) filed a complaint with the Mayur Vihar Phase-I police station in east Delhi three months ago, claiming her brother Shahrukh (18) had raped her. The police took the accused into custody, but a few days later the victim's parents persuaded her into taking back the case.
"I had to flee from the Nari Niketan. They were treating me very badly there. Not only me, they used to make the freshers wash the seniors' clothes, floors and clean the hostels and would also beat us for no reason. But that's not why I fled; the main reason is that I don't belong there. My brother is the one who should be inside rather than me. More over my father had promised to take me out from Nirmal Chhaya but he didn't turn up and the warden informed me that he had signed a court letter saying he didn't want to take me," Simi told MiD DAY, speaking from an undisclosed location.
"At around 1:30 am on that night, we tied a saree to a window on the third floor in order to escape. There was barbed wire fencing on the walls and all of us sustained injuries. Till 3 am we were out on the roads. During the getaway, we had to take shelter inside a bus for about an hour.
I was extremely happy to be out again but at my friend's relative's home another nightmare awaited me. The first few days of my stay were pretty uneventful but then I got to know about their true intentions. The woman who gave me shelter threatened me saying she would approach the police if I didn't sleep with her customers. I was rescued by my friend on Aug 27."
Simi claims, while fleeing from Nirmal Chhaya, a bus driver had molested Nasrin, 19 one of the runaway inmates when they asked him to help them escape. They had to give two nose rings to an auto driver as the fare had come to Rs 200 and they had no money.
When contacted Salim Khan, Simi' father, said: "I was about to get her out of the shelter home. When she fled from Nirmal Chhaya, we got a call from the security guard informing us about the incident. We are searching for our daughter. And her allegation about her being raped by my son is false. If we find her we'll definitely take her back to our home".
However, Simi says doesn't want to go back home because she is scared at the thought staying with her brother.
Despite various attempt to contact Nirmal Chhaya, there was no response from the concerned authorities.
Fugitives
The girls who fled from the shelter home with Simi are Aarti (15), Reena (17), Nasrin (19) and Neetu(21).
A police official said: "Nirmal Chhaya had filed a complaint regarding the matter. At present we've got two of the girls back. We are trying to get the others back as soon as possible."
