Nagaland cop fires in air under the influence of alcohol

While Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda celebrated New Year in Ranchi, a security personnel posted at his New Delhi residence decided to do the same by firing his service weapon in the air. Police officials said that Sundep Jamis of Nagaland Armed Police who was posted at Munda's residence was in an inebriated condition when he took out his Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) and started firing in the air.

As the firing continued non-stop, Sundep's senior Commander K Rigma rushed to the spot and overpowered him. He then informed a Delhi Police constable deployed at the entrance who in turn informed Munda's Personal Assistant (PA) Banshi Bihari.u00a0 Bihari lodged a complaint with police and an FIR was registered at Parliament Street police station against the accused cop.

"I am celebrating New Year. Let me enjoy; you too open the fire." These were the few words that spilt from the mouth of the accused when he was detained by cops. "In Nagaland we celebrate New Year vibrantly. We must fire in the air and so I did the same here. I did nothing wrong," said the 32-year-old. The police said that Sundep Jamis the accused cop was not prepared to let go of his SLR rifle and asked the others to stay away from him.u00a0

Delhi police personnel deployed at Munda's house said they first thought someone was bursting crackers at New Year's Eve. "I heard the noise but I thought it was from fireworks. Later a security personnel came running to me and shouted that a guard was firing his weapon. After hearing this I ran towards the place from where the noise was coming. I was shocked to see that a Nagaland cop who was totally drunk was firing in the air from his SLR," said a policeman posted at Munda's house.

Arrested and released

Police said that no one was hurt in the incident. A medical examination of Sundep revealed a high alcohol content in his blood. The accused cop was arrested and later released on bail. Delhi Police also complained to his senior after lodging a case against him.
