Radio One's carpool initiative is a big hit in Bangalore. It works here because it provides simple answers to a complex problem, says ACP Praveen Sood

In the last six months, 10,000 people have signed up for Let's Pool In, a carpool initiative by Radio One, Commute Easy and the city traffic police.

At a function to mark the milestone on (check), police commissioner Shankar Bidari said, "Carpooling is a great way to do your bit to reduce your carbon footprint as well as the money you spend on petrol each day. By December, we need to target one lakh carpoolers and for that I'm ready to help in any way. From the day I took over, my priority has been to bring about smooth traffic movement."

Additional commissioner of police (Traffic) Praveen Sood said, "We will work day in and day out to promote this initiative. I'm happy that Bangalore has taken to the idea of carpooling. It works here because it provides simple answers to a complex problem."

R K Mishra, Lead India winner, said: "It's a win-win situation for every stakeholder and a long-term sustainable solution for traffic problems. Any amount of infrastructure will not solve the problem if the demand for private transport continues to rise at the present rate."

Your reward

HP India, which is also supporting the initiative, is coming up with an application which will tell you how many trees you've saved and the carbon credits you've earned by carpooling.

Let's Pool In will soon be extended to corporates, schools, colleges, hospitals with staffu00a0 working in shifts and other office-goers.

The initiative also found support among prominent citizens, including theatre personality Arundhati Nag.
