17 killed in a major accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway

At least 17 persons were killed in a ghastly road accident involving a bus and two private vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Panvel on Sunday, officials said

At least 17 persons were killed in a ghastly road accident involving a bus and two private vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Panvel on Sunday, officials said.

According to State Highway Control, the accident occurred near Shendug curve on the Pune-Mumbai arm of the E-Way around 4.00 a.m.

The injured have been rushed to MGM hospital, Ashtvinayak hospital and Panashia Hospital in Panvel and Kamothe based hospital. Most of them are critical. 

Due to the impact of the collision, one of the private cars was thrown into a 40-feet deep ditch.

According to Expressway control room attendant said, ''The accident took place around 5.45 am after a Swift desire car's wheel got a puncture. Since they did not have tools to repair it, they decided to take help from the Innova car coming from behind. Both the car halted and after a while, the wheel was repaired. The cars resumed their journey back to Mumbai when suddenly a luxury bus dashed against the two cars and dragged it for some 9 kilometers before landing into a quarry."

He added, ''Our team along with local residents and police have rushed to the spot and have taken the passengers to hospital. In one of hospitals, there were no additional bed so we rushed some injured to another hospital. ''

Among the victims are seven women and one child.

Four of the injured victims were rushed to hospitals in Panvel.
