The 19-year-old woman, whose throat was slit by her brothers over an alleged relationship with a man, died around 10.30 pm at KEM Hospital on Thursday.
Jyoti, a resident of Borivli West, was hospitalised on Wednesday after her brothers, Anil and Gaurav Rajbhar, attacked her, allegedly to protect their ‘family honour’. Jyoti was the only woman among five siblings.
Anil and Gaurav, who were arrested by the MHB police, claimed that they were furious when they found out that she was dating, and brickered over it with her several times. Having had enough of the fights, Jyoti left home and moved into a relative’s home on Monday.
On Tuesday, Anil called her home and offered to drop her back to Malad around 6.15 am the next day. When they reached a dilapidated, abandoned building near LIC church, Anil slit her throat with a knife, while Gaurav injured her with a blade. The brothers left her to die.
A passer-by spotted Jyoti and rushed her to the Sorana Hospital. Jyoti was shifted to the Shatabdi Hospital for a surgery and then moved to KEM Hospital.
Police sources said Anil and Gaurav, who are in police custody, are likely to be charged with murder.
